MAKATI CITY, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DoJ) has created a task force that will deal with cybersecurity issues in legislation and investigation.
The group will pursue the e-government agenda, institutionalize a cybersecurity regime and implement laws, according to State Prosecutor Geronimo Sy, chairman of the new task force.
The cybersecurity body will be under Assistant State Prosecutor Severino Gana, a copy of the DoJ order said.
“This is the first task force of its kind. It will cover everything that relates to cybercrime and security,” he said.
The task force will work closely with the Council of Europe, a private organization, and local experts composed of IT practitioners and other stakeholders, he said. It will also push for the swift passage of the cybercrime prevention act, which failed to pass in the previous Congress.
“It will also harmonize and rationalize all efforts in government,” Sy added, noting that the task force will also create a 24 by 7 center for global operations.
The task force hopes to “take center stage” in the passage of laws that would protect investors in the high-tech industry. It will work with the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police.
So far, the country has convicted two hackers under Republic Act No. 8792 or the electronic commerce law.
